EP Review: Watch Me Rise - 'Bedtime Stories'

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Coming off the release of their 2022 singles, "Wrong Way," and "Black Dots," Watch Me Rise evolves their sound to new bold and lilting heights with their new EP, Bedtime Stories.

Since 2018, Watch Me Rise has been steadily making a name for themselves within the emo/post-hardcore scene. When they entered the music scene with their first EP, Of Anxious Minds and Sleepless Nights, their unpolished and emotional approach to the genre would grow their sound into 2019's melodically charged experiences, "Cancer" and "Addict," which would catapult its way to 2022's atmospheric and aggressive moments, "Black Dot" and "Wrong Way." Their dynamic distention and experience have built their latest EP, Bedtime Stories.

A lovely contrasting blend of honeyed guitar tones, fast-paced drum work, and raw-throated vocals, Watch Me Rise continues to impressively pull off their balancing act of dissonant soft and heavy elements to create something that is uniquely their own.

Watch Me Rise impresses with their skillful handling of math rock and post-hardcore elements in their tenacious and euphonic first experience, "Halo." The band's vocal prowess shines through as they expertly balance glittering guitar tones and melodic percussive cadence, making way for other gorgeous highlights throughout the EP.

"A Place You Belong" amps up the energy on Bedtime Stories without losing its rich melodies and great use of echoing guitars to create a luxurious atmosphere to balance out the charismatic edge of the vocals before moving onto another candy-coated fury experience, "Silence."A lovely contrasting blend of honeyed guitar tones, fast-paced drum work, and raw-throated vocals, Watch Me Rise continues to impressively pull off their balancing act of dissonant soft and heavy elements to create something that is uniquely their own.

The EP ends with full-toned and fractious numbers, "All My Friends Are Sad," and a dreamy spoken-word finale, "Bedtime Stories." Two contrasting coloratura experiences that pull off some very emotionally engaging instrumental feats paired with strong petulant vocals, Bedtime Stories details some of their best work towards the close of the EP.

Watch Me Rise since their inception five years ago continue to conquer and dominate both descant and heavy elements while showcasing a little room to grow and experiment with both. Throughout Bedtime Stories, Watch Me Rise utilize all the creative tools at their disposal from beginning to end yet still maintains their gravid and melodically impassioned nature that captivatingly holds it together. While just a slice of what this band currently has to offer for the year, Watch Me Rise proves with Bedtime Stories that they are one of the post-hardcore bands to be looking at in the future.
