Artist's Notebook: The Phoenix Within - "Abuso"

The Phoenix Within confronts mental and physical abuse with their latest new single, "Abuso"

Physical and emotional abuse can be a devastating experience for any individual. However, the impact of such abuse can be even more profound for those who suffer in silence, with their scars hidden beneath the surface. Unfortunately, these silent warriors are often unrecognized for the struggles they face, making it difficult for them to seek help or support. This is where The Phoenix Within comes in with their latest track, "Abuso," which serves as a reminder that they are not alone in their struggles.

Lyrically we are trying to empower people who have been tortured and hurt in any sort of relationship. If you have ever been told by someone that you don’t mean anything to anyone, or if you’ve been told that you are getting what you deserve because you are nothing, we are here to tell you that you are being lied to. It is the abuser, the monster who is truly not worthy of the victim’s time, energy, loyalty, or affection.

Through a beautiful combination of gritty and radiant guitar melodies, energetic basslines, and heart-pumping percussive rhythms, The Phoenix Within aims to shine a light on this important issue. The lyrics of "Abuso" are a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of those who have experienced abuse, urging them to rise above their pain and take control of their lives. The track stands to the fact that no one is a victim of fate, and that everyone has the power to overcome their struggles.

"Abuso" is a powerful and inspiring track that speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever experienced abuse. By reminding us that we are not alone, The Phoenix Within offers hope and healing to those who need it most.

Hey, The Phoenix Within! Welcome back to Into the Void! The last time we spoke, you had just released your single, "Contender." I know this single tested you in a variety of ways to ensure that you continued to deliver the best of what The Phoenix Within symbolizes. You are also a band that enjoys experimenting. You can hear that change in "Abuso." While much of the melodic integrity remains, this new experience has a more alternative and grunge feel. What distinguishes the composing process for "Abuso" from "The Contender" instrumentally?

The Phoenix Within: Our latest single "Abuso" starts with bright guitar octave melodies, a thumping undertone carrying bass lines, and powerful, energetic, and intricate drum work. Gentle singing is introduced as guitars ring out a dissonate chord, and clean guitar picking fills in the backing atmosphere of the track. A couple of hits on a bass drum mark a clear transition, that launches into a powerful anthemic chorus filled with catchy vocal hooks and dynamic instrumentals. The Phoenix Within mixes a progressive metal sound with a diverse hard/alternative rock style in this track. After a raw scream in the second verse, the track introduces a guitar solo layered over bright but heavy guitar chord progressions. The song ends with a heavy-hitting riff section that brings back the screaming from earlier in the track, ending the song on a very intense note. The Phoenix Within rides the line between rock and metal and utilizes elements from both genres that will hopefully attract fans of both.

Lyrically, you guys tend to write a lot of anthems for the downtrodden. I felt like “Contender” exemplified that perfectly. Where one is not surrendering and not letting the actions of others tear them down. I feel like “Abuso” continues to follow these themes. You guys are focusing on the victims of mental and physical abuse. Can we talk about some of the themes you are writing about in this new single?

The Phoenix Within: "Abuso" was written specifically for victims of mental or physical abuse. lyrically we are trying to empower people who have been tortured and hurt in any sort of relationship.

What have you taken from writing such a single, you guys have been a band since 2012 and have come a long way since the debut of your EP and the release of your three albums up to this point?

The Phoenix Within: The goal for this single was to offer a track that musically walked a line between heavy and soft rock. Lyrically I wanted the track to carry a sense of authenticity and vulnerability and somehow offered listeners hope or courage to perhaps confront their struggles and break free from any cycle of abuse they may find themselves in.

What do you want listeners to take from this new experience? For me, I love that this is a reminder that no matter how weak one thinks they are, there is power within oneself to fight against the monsters who hide in the shadows. That the victims are truly stronger than those who think they possess actual strength

The Phoenix Within: That is exactly what I want, you nailed it!

What is next for you guys?
