German metalcore band Lets Kill The Captain rebrand their sound and release new emotionally-built single, "Hollow King."
Let's Kill The Captain has always been a band that have prided themselves on bringing their craft into the new era with shades of aggressive power and a new wave of gravid inspirational flavors. When Marius, Fredi, and Adrian began making music as kids, it began as nothing more than a fun pastime.
"This single made us feel free again. The process of writing our first EP The Rotting was kinda hard for us. We felt like we were trapped in our expectations and in the goals, we set years ago. When we released that EP, we broke free from all of that, deciding to start a new era without any creative boundaries."
When the band began to further flesh out with a vocalist, bass, and drummer, Let's Kill the Captain would take off in a much different direction, reinventing themselves to take the metalcore act to greater heights to push their career and sound. The result of their new transition period is their new emotionally-built single, "Hollow King." With heavy, titanic guitar riffs surrounded by epic orchestral soundscapes, "Hollow King" drives new personal freedom and poignantly dynamic evolution for the German metalcore bands' promising future. Lyrically diving into the inner decay of a person, "Hollow King" emotionally touches on ongoing failures and emotional burdens, that leave nothing but apathy and emptiness.
What started Let's Kill The Captain? What is the story behind the band?
Marius, Fredi, and Adrian made music together since they were kids and covered songs from their favorite bands for fun. As time moved on, they wanted to write their songs and start a real band, so they were looking for a singer. They saw the vocal covers of Fynn on Youtube and invited him to record a song in the studio together and get to know each other. All of us were getting along perfectly right away and started writing new songs. The band wanted to play their first show in 2018 and organized a show in their rehearsal room. But they still needed a bass player, so Fynn asked his brother, who normally played the drums if he wanted to join. He instantly agreed and learned all of the songs in one month on an instrument he never played before and became the final member of Let’s Kill The Captain.
What are your musical influences? How did they help build your new single, "Hollow King?"
Every member has different musical influences. That’s what keeps our songwriting interesting, making us experiment with different styles and genres. “Hollow King” wasn’t influenced by any specific bands or songs. “Hollow King” felt like it had this unique sound to deliver, and the message of the song just sort of flowed together in this way.
"Hollow King" is your heaviest single to date. How was this creative process different from your previous releases?
With “Hollow King”, we wanted to write a song that is as heavy and dark as the lyrics. So we created this massive wall of sound with the drums, guitars, and bass while keeping the epic atmosphere alive with this melodic orchestra. The biggest difference in comparison to our older songs was how we wrote “Hollow King”. We are not writing the songs in our rehearsal room anymore. We had no way of recording the ideas then. We are writing our songs directly in our studio nowadays. That allows us to get more creative and experiment with new instruments and techniques.
How do you feel this single has helped you evolve personally as an artist?
This single made us feel free again. The process of writing our first EP The Rotting was kinda hard for us. We felt like we were trapped in our expectations and in the goals, we set years ago. When we released that EP, we broke free from all of that, deciding to start a new era without any creative boundaries. “Hollow King” was the first song we wrote in this new era, and it felt totally refreshing. It revitalized the whole band. I think you can hear that in the song as well.
What do you want others to take from this new release or even your fans coming into this evolution of your sound?
We want our fans and new listeners to feel the excitement that we put into our new music while expecting the unexpected. We will not write the same songs over and over again. This new era will be filled with surprises and things you’ve never heard from us before.
What is next for you guys this year?
We can finally start playing shows again this year, and we’re looking forward to that! We missed the stage way too much. But we are also working on new songs all of the time so you can expect new music!
