EP Review: The Cake Is A Lie - 'Fado'

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

Melodic hardcore band The Cake Is A Lie introduces their new immersive and distinctly heavy EP, Fado.

The Cake Is A Lie's music can best be described as melodic hardcore that manifests emotion and passion for the people that listen to it. When it came to detailing their EP, they aimed to take it further. To them, it is more than bringing a raw and emotionally challenging experience to their new EP, Fado. It was about creatively making music in a predominately aggressive genre without any limits.

The Cake Is a Lie's "Silence We" and "Grey Shift" continue to explore and contentiously challenge the genre as it gears up for the grand finale, "Sleep/Sing." A colossal six-minute track that encompasses all the deep brooding atmosphere and instrumental presence Fado has shown up to this point, the EP comes to a confident close.

From the beginning, Fado defies and pushes their sound by creating a listening experience that has no borders. The first impression track, "Fado," is experientially intense while remaining within the confines of being beautifully intimate and honest in its delivery. Even though this is only the first experience, the emotional weight it carries complements the other feverish moments that immediately follow it.

One of the EP's best highlights is the hulking experience "Blurry," which pulls no punches with its unrelenting percussion fervor and distinctive ringing guitar patterns while fusing beautifully raw and agitated vocals.

"Darker Us" and "Nichts" navigate the EP into heavier territory, showing that the band is capable of pulling off moody and explosive moments while remaining true to the soundscapes they have upheld since the beginning of Fado. The spoken word portion of "Nichts" also offers a welcome change of pace and lends the EP a more divisive feel.

The Cake Is A Lie focuses on creating one immersive atmosphere with Fado rather than just working on evoking individual track experiences. Cinematically bridging the gap between the EP's melancholic yet bellicose environment, The Cake Is A Lie is proving they have a chance at being successful within the scene this year.
